The VRC’s Polar Bear Racing Series keeps crews sailing through the cooler months, bringing friendly competition and fresh air to English Bay. From autumn afternoons to brisk winter days, changing conditions offer a chance to sharpen your skills, test your tactics, and put your teamwork into practice.

The rivalries are lively, but the camaraderie is just as much a part of the experience. After racing, warm up at the clubhouse, compare notes, and relive the day’s best moves—or explain the ones that didn’t quite go to plan.

SHAG Race

One Sailor. One Boat. Anything Goes.

The VRC’s annual SHAG Race brings individual adventure and friendly competition to English Bay. Single-Handed Anything Goes is your chance to take the helm, call every tack, and put your sailing skills to the test—all on your own.

There’s something especially satisfying about bringing it all together without a crew. From choosing your course to trimming your sails, every decision is yours, and every successful manoeuvre is one you can claim for yourself. Whether you’re a seasoned solo sailor or usually rely on a few extra hands aboard, the SHAG offers a fun challenge and a fresh perspective on racing.

Come for the competition, the bragging rights, or simply the pleasure of a day on the water with fellow VRC sailors. Back at the Club, share your best moments, missed opportunities, and tales of single-handed ingenuity.

Rallying a crew is one thing you can leave off your list. Just rig up, head out, and see what you’ve got—single-handed, anything goes!

Ken & Barbie Race

Two Sailors. One Boat. Plenty of Personality.

The VRC’s annual Ken & Barbie Race brings double-handed sailing and a playful spirit to English Bay. With just two sailors aboard, it’s a chance to put your teamwork to the test, enjoy some friendly competition, and have a little fun along the way.

Every tack, sail adjustment, and tactical decision takes coordination when there are only two of you sharing the work. Whether you’re an experienced racing partnership or trying double-handed sailing for the first time, the Ken & Barbie offers a rewarding challenge. Cruising boats are welcome too, making this a great opportunity to give racing a try.

And then there’s the wardrobe. Costumes are part of the fun, giving crews a chance to show off their creativity alongside their sailing skills. Coordinate your outfits, embrace the theme, or come as you are—the spirit of the day is all about getting involved and enjoying yourself.

Find your sailing partner, plan your look, and head for the start line. Whether you’re chasing a strong finish or a memorable day afloat, this annual favourite gives you plenty of reasons to get out on the water.

VRC Summer Regatta

Summer Sailing. Spirited Racing. Great Company. And Lobster!

The VRC’s annual Summer Regatta brings sailors together for a weekend of competition on English Bay and good times back at the Club. With summer breezes, a spectacular waterfront setting, and crews eager to put their skills to the test, it’s a highlight of the Club’s sailing calendar.

On the water, teamwork and tactics come into play as crews find their rhythm, read the conditions, and look for an opportunity to get ahead. Every start offers a fresh chance, every mark rounding keeps things interesting, and there’s always a familiar rival to keep you working right to the finish.

The fun carries on ashore, where competitors, volunteers, and friends gather to compare notes and celebrate the day’s sailing. The Lobster Bash adds a festive touch to the weekend, bringing everyone together for a great meal, lively conversation, and a few racing stories that may grow taller as the evening goes on.

Whether you’re chasing a place on the podium or enjoying a weekend of racing with your crew, the Summer Regatta celebrates everything we love about sailing at the VRC. Gather your team, bring your competitive spirit, and make some summer memories on and off the water.
