About Us

Jokers Field Hockey is a vibrant, inclusive club built on a shared love of the game and a strong sense of community. Whether you’re picking up a stick for the first time or have years of experience, Jokers offers a welcoming environment where players can develop their skills, stay active, and enjoy the sport together.

Founded on the belief that field hockey should be accessible, social, and fun, our club brings together players of all ages and abilities. We pride ourselves on creating a supportive atmosphere that balances friendly competition with camaraderie both on and off the field.

At Jokers, we focus on:

  • Skill Development – Providing opportunities for players to improve through structured play, coaching, and game experience.
  • Team Spirit – Building connections and friendships that extend beyond the pitch.
  • Inclusive Play – Welcoming players of all backgrounds and experience levels.
  • Love of the Game – Keeping the joy, energy, and passion of field hockey at the heart of everything we do.

Throughout the season, we participate in league play, training sessions, and social events that make Jokers more than just a team—it’s a community.

Our home field is located at Eric Hamber Secondary School, on the east side of Oak Street between 33rd and 37th Avenues, directly across from VanDusen Botanical Garden. Parking is available along Oak Street or in the parking lot at the south end of the field, accessible from Oak Street. This is where we host the majority of our games and all of our practices. Other field locations can be found on the men's league and women's league websites.

Whether you’re looking to compete, stay fit, or simply have fun, Jokers Field Hockey is a place to belong.

Jokers Field Hockey Club has both a men's and women's section with a range of teams to suit everybody's ability, whether you're an experienced player or have never played before.

Umpiring

In the Vancouver field hockey leagues, all teams are required to supply rated umpires for other teams' games throughout the season.

All umpires are paid by the respective leagues and Jokers will reimburse members the fee for the umpiring course once they are rated and have umpired two games for the club.

Umpiring payments vary, depending on the umpire's level of qualification. For more information see the men's league or women's league websites.

History in Short

The Jokers Hockey Club was founded in 1964 by Victor Warren, DK Fraser, Joost Wolsak and John Young. They were a group of players from university who wanted to continue playing after they graduated but couldn't find a social club in Vancouver - and so the Jokers were born.

DK came up with the name "Jokers", Joost (being Dutch) came up with the orange color for the uniforms, John designed the logo and Victor "just made it all happen". We've been proudly wearing orange and that logo and calling ouselves Jokers ever since.

Following a mixed tournament in 1967, Jokers did the honourable thing and allowed ladies to join the club (after much arm twisting by the female contingent).

After a decade of running the Jokers from members' basements and various bars around the city, the Jokers joined the Vancouver Rowing Club in 1974 after much work by Stuart Wilson, the Jokers President at the time.

The Jokers have been heavily involved in Field Hockey BC and Field Hockey Canada over the years, and have had many Olympian and national players wearing the Jokers uniform.

Today, the legacy is still strong. We have success on the field, a lot of fun off it.

The Jokers wouldn't be the Jokers without an array of social events throughout the year. We make good use of our excellent facilities at the Vancouver Rowing Club, and these events are a great chance to get to know your fellow Jokers.

Events

September - Rookie Night
As the first social event of the season, Rookie Night is the perfect opportunity for old teammates to catch up and new members to see what a Jokers' social event is really all about. It takes place in the Carver Bar at the clubhouse and there's plenty of food, drinks and games all night. Each team designates their rookies, and for this honour, the rookies are treated to lots of fun, games...and surprises!

December - Christmas Party
Although the Jokers never really need an excuse to party, Christmas has to be the best excuse there is. Hockey players dress up in their finest attire (or ugliest sweater) to enjoy food and drink, dancing, prizes and plenty of socializing in the seasonally decorated Harbour Room of the Vancouver Rowing Club.

April - Awards Night
Awards Night is how we end the season with a bit of fun and a lot of recognition. It is a chance for us to award our top players and coaches and thank our many volunteers. This event offers a chance for teams to get together for one last time and relive the memories of the season before the summer break.

If you're looking for more information or tickets to an event, talk to your Team Rep or contact us.

To play for the Jokers, there are two sets of dues that you will need to pay: Club & Sport Dues.

Club dues are paid to the Vancouver Rowing Club and cover all aspects of the Club including administration, turf time, league fees, coaching, etc., as well as access to all the great facilities available at the Club. Club and section dues are set annually in August.

If this applies to you, please email me ([email protected]) so I can have the office charge you the correct dues.

Sport Dues

Sport dues are paid to Field Hockey BC (FHBC), and this includes your Field Hockey Canada (FHC) dues.

Regisitration with FHBC/FHC is mandatory.

FHBC regulates and organizes all league play, as well as the junior development leagues. Your registration fees support and encourage the development of field hockey within BC. FHC insures you should you be injured or injure another player while playing field hockey during the upcoming year.

You can pay your FHBC/FHC dues by credit card on the FHBC website.

Deadline for Payment

FHBC dues cover you from September 1 until August 31. All players must have paid their FHBC dues in order to be allowed to play or practice.

Equipment

Jokers play hockey pretty much all year round.  With regular season, Spring and Summer hockey, there's not a week goes by when you won't find a Joker on a hockey field. It doesn't stop there, with tournaments and tours, and even a chance to do some rowing, the Jokers sporting calendar is pretty packed.

The regular season starts in September, with selection and pre-season practice in August. Jokers have teams in the men's league and women's league in Vancouver.

Jokers teams cater to all abilities, from beginners to top level players.

Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with practice on a weekday evening.

All teams have a coach and a team representative, so players are well looked after, both on and off the field.

Summer mixed hockey is an enjoyable and relaxed way to get in a bit of hockey over the summer.

From the end of June to mid-August, Jokers are invited to drop-in for an informal game, which can range from 5-aside to 20-aside. It gives everyone an opportunity to keep fit, keep their skills up and stay in touch. All welcome - all you need is $5 and a white and dark shirt.

It's also a great chance for players that are new to the Jokers to get to know the Club and players who are new to field hockey to get a bit of coaching and a kick-start before the start of the season.

Canada vs The Rest of the World

This annual Jokers tournament sees the Canadians defend their field hockey honour against a team of Jokers from around the world. In 2018, the game took place on Saturday, June 2, 3-4pm at Livingstone Field.

The Vancouver International Tournament

The first Vancouver International Tournament (known as the VIT) was held in 1995 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of field hockey in Vancouver. The VIT is an FHBC tournament held at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex during the Victoria Day long weekend in May.

VRC Intersectional Regatta

The Intersectional Regatta (hosed by the Rowing Section) gives Jokers a chance to test our skills on the water instead of on the field, as we compete against Yachting, Rugby and the Staff in an eight man sweep race.

Golden Oldies

The Golden Oldies Fesivals are held every two years in a different country. Jokers International has a long history with the tournament, as can be seen on our Touring page. Unfortunately, the festival has been on hold since 2019, but we hope to see it revived soon.

If you are interested in Golden Oldies or any of our tournaments please contact us.

In keeping with the Jokers' tradition of maintaining a "healthy social element" to their hockey, the VRC Jokers Club has toured the world extensively.  In fact, Jokers were the first overseas team to play in Cuba, Colombia, Tobago and Taiwan.

From the formation of the club in 1964, the Jokers wasted no time and began travelling the world in 1966. So much is the Jokers' touring tradition that a special International Touring Side was formed, known as Jokers International. Since 1985, Jokers International has attended all but one of the Golden Oldies Festivals.
